User Ability Modeling for a Simple and Adaptive Communication UI on a Touch-based Android Device for Elderly People

Simplicity and adaptability can be considered as two important factors for interface design, especially for special target users like the elderly people. In order to build such an interface, it is needed to have an understanding of the users in terms of their abilities. User ability model should be comprehensive, taking into account perceptual, cognitive and motor abilities of the user. Once studied in a complete manner, simplicity of the interface can be defined quantitatively and it should be possible to make the interface adaptive, dynamically minimizing the complexity.

Design and Implementation of an Intelligent and Adaptive Communication UI on a Touch-based Device for Elderly People

It would be nice, especially for specific target users (like elderly people), to have user interfaces adaptable to their abilities. For example, it is possible to imagine a user interface whose elements (icons, text, etc.) change their characteristics (size, color, etc.) to adapt to motor and visual abilities of the user. Intelligent techniques should be used to understand (and measure) the ability of the user in different aspects and to make a move in the design space of the user interface to be more suitable to user abilities.
